Return to ZL1AMW additional information page

News Updated 9 Oct 2010

Recent Changes

9 Oct 2010 - This site was moved to a new server a year ago, but has suffered from a lack of attention. Today I have spent some time tidying up, (mostly correcting dead links) and I hope to get the content up to date over the next few weeks.

22 Feb 2004 - updated the APRS frequencies mapUnproto settings page updated with improved explanation also.  New Zealand symbols tables updated.

8 August 2003 - re-presented the live APRS data page.  Now directly accessible from the url: www.zl1amw.wallace.net.nz/live

17 June 2003 - Added a report from an APRS users forum at NZART conference in Masterton, 1 June 2003, plus Waikato VHF Group in Hamilton on 8 June 2003

07 June 2003 - Changed the snapshot pages, now show three separate view of APRS activity in NZ, updated every 10 minutes.  Also added a new power point presentation, prepared for NZART conference 2003 on 1 June 2003

06 January 2003 - added a linked search, from Google on the main index page.  Modified the map of activity to make it interactive (and easier to keep updated)

31 December - added new frames pages to view live data from the ZL1AMW station. General update on the New Zealand operations pages, new frequencies, paths etc reflecting the development or APRS in ZL. References to my email removed, and a contact ZL1AMW page set up, in an attempt to reduce spam growth.

06 Oct - Updated the map of frequencies used in New Zealand, plus added the minutes of an APRS meeting held in Hamilton.

17 Jan - Added a map of what frequencies are in use around New Zealand, updated the recommended unproto settings page.

6 Jan 2002 - First update for some time.  Maps are now on Brenda ZL2UMF's site, so info does not change has as much as before.  New page on setting up your UI-View, with emphasis on New Zealand operation.  Some minor  tidy-up of others.

12 May - change in focus!  No longer providing maps, pointed map seekers to the excellent site of Brenda ZL2UMF.  Changed into a resource for how to set up UI-View and info on APRS operation in New Zealand.  Also carried out a refresh of a number of pages.

31 Mar - added a new guide for baycom users to set up AGW then Winpack and/or UI-View.  I receive a number of calls on this topic, maybe this guide will help?  Your comment would be appreciated.

11 Mar - big change again - finally moved to a commercial hosting agreement - Thanks to go to qsl.net for their marvellous free hosting, but again, performance was becoming a problem.  Now the site is at www.zl1amw.wallace.net.nz with an auto-redirect from www.qsl.net/zl1amw.  Users should  note much faster downloading, and no more lock-ups .

16 Jan  - A number of new maps, mostly in the mid to south of the North Island, and Nelson/Marlborough.

07 Jan 2001 - Big changes! Mostly given up on homepage.com - their free hosting of this page is much appreciated, but it has been off-line mostly for the past 3 week, or very very slow responding, and no answer to admin emails. All pages now shifted to qsl.net, which seems much more reliable (although had a problem over the Christmas-New Year week). Re-edited my main page, plus set up several new sub-pages to make finding information much simpler. Added a few more maps - lots more in the pipeline, mostly close scale versions of existing areas. Added a brag page on ZL1AMW - but still to have some detail inserted.

Nov 18 - Added a new Symbols page - with a UI-View symbols file that includes "localised" items.

Nov 4 - Updated the inf files for the Hamilton City roadmaps - quite a task, with maps of this detail, errors are difficult to avoid.

Oct 14 - A major shift of the location for the map files - all stored on qsl.net now. If you find any broken links or files missing, please drop me a note - address on the main page. This web site now has two presences (both identical), - zl1amw.homepage.com and qsl.net/zl1amw My thanks to these organisations for providing free web hosting.

Sept 15 - Added a word document handout sheet - this is what I use when presenting to clubs around New Zealand - has some useful local information. Look in the "presentations" area.

Aug 19 - Was persuaded to change to the more accepted WGS 84 for my GPS, so have had to update a number of the more detailed street map's reference files plus added a new info page on datums.

July 19 - Disaster! homepage.com was bought out and re-structured. This destroyed my file storage areas totally - got it fixed now - hosing the files on a different site. Sorry for all those broken links - should be fixed now.

May 16 - In past few weeks have updated several pages, plus added some info on recommended uproto path settings for various locations.

Mar 9 - Added a page on activity in New Zealand - this includes suggested frequencies to look for APRS/ UI-View

Feb 25 - Added a number of more detailed North Island maps

20 Feb 2000 - corrected some errors in page North Island maps pointing to maps of Northland and Taranaki.

Background

This page holds some notes on where things are going on this site.

To date the site has been set up as a simple way to distribute map files for users of UI-View. Most are extracted from a CD of New Zealand Topographical maps (see the copyright page for info).

At times there are errors on the .inf files, and users can edit these themselves. If you to improve a map please drop me a copy of the new file, and I will include it on this site for others to share.

If you find an error that you cannot correct, please also drop me a note and I will try to get it corrected.

Any other map sites?

If you know of other sites providing APRS or UI-View info relevant to  New Zealand, please drop me a note and I will include references to them.
